According to The Guardian and Voice of America, a suspected air strike in Finote Selam, located in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, killed at least 26 people on Sunday. The victims, who ranged from children to the elderly, were wearing civilian or traditional clothing, according to hospital officials. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) expressed “grave concern” over the escalating violence and called for an end to human rights violations.
The air strike is one of the deadliest incidents in the ongoing conflict between the Ethiopian army and the Fano militia, a paramilitary group. The conflict intensified after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared a six-month state of emergency in Amhara on August 4, following Fano’s refusal to disarm.
Witnesses reported that the explosion appeared to be from a drone strike, though this has not been officially confirmed. The violence has led to significant casualties and injuries, with 55 people currently receiving treatment.
Recent clashes have been fueled by accusations from Fano that the federal government aims to weaken Amhara’s defenses. The EHRC has documented numerous human rights abuses, including the killing of protesters, looting of weapons, and targeting of regional officials.
